Lena Ceramic Leafy Hexagon Earrings

Description

A three tier drop earring hand built from recycled stoneware clay, each piece pressed with a botanical stamp and glazed so the deep jade green sits heavy at the centre and fades out to a pearlescent white speckle at the edges. Where the two glazes overlap a soft blue appeared that stopped me in my tracks. She hangs long from stainless steel hooks and has a satisfying visual weight to her without being heavy to wear. Made by me in Melbourne. There is only one of her.

Story Behind the Piece

Lena started as an experiment in visual weight. I wanted to see what happened if I let the colour sit dense in the middle and thin out toward the edges, like something luminous at its core. I layered jade green and white speckle glaze and where they met at the boundary, this soft blue crept in through the firing. The kiln always has the last word and this time I was glad it did.

Artist Notes

Each of the three tiers was hand built separately using geometric cookie cutters, then pressed all over with a botanical stamp while the clay was still soft. After cutting the hanging holes and sponging the edges, I layered jade green glaze across the centre of each piece and white speckle glaze toward the outer edges, letting them overlap in the middle. The blue that appeared where the two glazes met came through the kiln as a complete surprise. The three tiers are connected with stainless steel jump rings. After the second firing I assembled all the hardware by hand to complete the piece.

Care Instructions

Store in a dry place. Avoid contact with water, perfumes and lotions. Remove before swimming or showering. Clean gently with a soft dry cloth. Store separately to prevent scratching.
