Jess Ceramic Matcha Bowl and Whisk Holder Set

Description

A hand built stoneware chawan (matcha bowl) and chazen (whisk holder) set, painted all over with a large scale freehand floral in coral pink, cobalt blue, yellow and orange on a white ground. The bowl has a wide open form with a gently uneven rim and a small spout. The chazen sits on a little footed base with a finer botanical pattern around the rim. Both pieces are made and painted by me in Melbourne. One of a kind, this set will not be made again.

Please note: the bowl has a surface crack that appeared during firing. It does not affect the functionality of the piece at all and the bowl is fully food safe, but I want to be upfront about it. This is reflected in the price.

Story Behind the Piece

Matcha comes from the earth and I wanted to honour that with something that felt alive and growing. I kept thinking about being tiny in a giant flower garden, everything enormous and bright, petals the size of rooms. The pattern started with the big open flowers and just kept going from there.

Artist Notes

Both pieces were hand built and painted entirely freehand using underglazes applied with nail polish brushes and fine paint brushes, then detailed with underglaze pencils for the finer lines. A clear glaze was applied over the top before firing. The colours shifted and deepened through the kiln in the way they always do, which is part of what makes each piece its own thing.

Stoneware clay, underglaze, underglaze pencils, clear glaze.

Care Instructions

Hand wash only. Do not submerge for extended periods. Dry thoroughly after use. Handle with care as the rim is delicate.
