Camille Ceramic Tiny Vase

Description

Introducing Camille, a wheel thrown midfire ceramic tiny vase from the studio. She is all about layered mark making and the push and pull of warm and cool tones together. Swirling purples, earthy reds and deep jewel greens move across the speckle clay surface in every direction, the underglazes applied at different opacities and watered down to different consistencies so each layer behaves differently. Glossy clear glaze over the top catches the light and brings everything to life. She sits between 2.5 and 4cm tall and looks beautiful with a single stem. One of a kind, handmade in Melbourne.

Story Behind the Piece

Camille came to me from a session of pure experimentation, layering underglazes in different directions and at different dilutions to see what happened. The marks are intuitive, the colours chosen by feel. There is something about the way earthy tones and jewel tones sit next to each other that I find completely compelling, like finding light in the dark.

Artist Notes

I threw Camille on my tiny wheel and painted her in layers using nail polish brushes and a very free hand. The key was varying how watery each underglaze was, some opaque and bold, some translucent and soft. Different directions, different pressures, different moods. After the second firing I love seeing what the glaze has done to the colour underneath. She is never quite what I expected.

These tiny vases are one of my favourite things to make. Each one is a completely different combination of colours, marks and glazes that I was drawn to in that moment. No two are ever the same.
