Arabella Ceramic Tiny Vase
Description
Introducing Arabella, a wheel thrown midfire ceramic tiny vase from the studio. She is deep and moody and earthy, blues and greens and warm ochres layered over each other in marks that feel almost like camouflage. The speckle clay shows through in places, the underglazes pooling and merging at different opacities. A glossy clear glaze pulls everything together and catches the light. She sits between 2.5 and 4cm tall and looks beautiful with a single stem. One of a kind, handmade in Melbourne.
Story Behind the Piece
Arabella came to me from a curiosity about what happens when you layer colours that should not go together and let them find each other anyway. The muted earthy palette is more contained than some of my other work, more inward. She reminds me of forest floors and old walls and the beauty of things that take a moment to reveal themselves.
Artist Notes
I threw Arabella on my tiny wheel and painted her intuitively, building up the blues and greens in layers using nail polish brushes at different dilutions. Some marks were made quickly, some slowly. The direction of each stroke changes how the colour sits. After firing the glaze brought a depth to the surface that I find different every time I look at her.

About the Series
These tiny vases are one of my favourite things to make. Each one is a completely different combination of colours, marks and glazes that I was drawn to in that moment. No two are ever the same.
