Ruffle Ceramic Sculptural Vase, 2025
Description
Introducing Ruffle, a hand built stoneware ceramic sculptural vase from the studio. She is built from soft strips of clay layered and draped to mimic the way fabric falls, the contrast between the softness of the form and the hardness of the material is everything. She is hand painted in black underglaze with an indigo chun glaze over the top, and in different lights the two layers interact to reveal flashes of deep blue underneath. A much darker piece than anything else I have made, and one of my favourites. One of a kind, handmade in Melbourne.
Story Behind the Piece
Ruffle came to me from a fascination with drapery and the way fabric catches light as it falls. I wanted to see if I could translate that softness into clay, something that looked like it was still moving. The black and indigo combination was intuitive, I wanted her to feel dramatic and considered, the kind of piece that changes depending on where the light hits.
Artist Notes
I built Ruffle by hand, layering strips of stoneware clay and coaxing them into undulating forms that reference folded fabric. The black underglaze goes on first, then the indigo chun glaze over the top. The chun glaze is unpredictable in the kiln, which is part of what I love about it. The blue flashes through differently on every surface depending on the angle. She was exhibited in Gallery Unbound's Tangent Exhibition in 2025.
