Lyra Ceramic Heart Earrings

Description

A pair of hand built stoneware heart earrings in a slightly elongated heart shape, stamped with a tiny palm tree texture and glazed in a rich terracotta red that pools into all the impressed lines and lets the raw clay show through underneath. She hangs from gold tone hooks and has that warm, slightly sun-weathered look that the red and natural clay together create. Made by me in Melbourne from recycled stoneware clay. One of a kind, she won't be made again.

Story Behind the Piece

Lyra reminds me of the Red Queen's lipstick. That particular shade of red, bold and a little theatrical, the kind that means business. I rolled the clay out, stamped it with a palm tree texture, then rolled it again to get that slight distortion and elongation in the heart shape. I love what happened to the pattern in the process, it gets a bit blurry and dreamlike, like something from Wonderland that isn't quite what it first appeared to be.

Artist Notes

Lyra was hand built using a heart shaped cookie cutter, then stamped with a palm tree texture mat. I rolled the slab again after stamping to elongate the shape and push the texture into something a little more distorted and interesting. After cutting the hanging hole and sponging the edges, I painted red underglaze over the whole surface and applied a clear gloss glaze over the top before the first firing. The raw clay showing through underneath the red is not a mistake, it is exactly what I was after. After the second firing I assembled all the hardware by hand to complete the piece.

Care Instructions

Store in a dry place. Avoid contact with water, perfumes and lotions. Remove before swimming or showering. Clean gently with a soft dry cloth. Store separately to prevent scratching.
