Aurelia Ceramic Tiny Vase

Description

Introducing Aurelia, a wheel thrown midfire ceramic tiny vase from the studio. She is hand painted using layered underglazes in deep blues, greens and warm earthy tones, with abstract motifs including a little palm tree that I love. The glaze is clear which lets all the colour and detail shine through, and the speckle clay adds beautiful texture underneath it all. She sits between 2.5 and 4cm tall and looks really cute with a single stem. One of a kind, handmade in Melbourne.

Story Behind the Piece

Aurelia came from a session where I just wanted to play. I was experimenting with layering underglazes, seeing what happened when light colours sat next to dark ones, how the outlines changed the whole feeling of the piece. The palm tree motif appeared and I loved it, so she stayed. These tiny vases are where I feel most free in my practice.

Artist Notes

I threw Aurelia on my tiny wheel which I adore, there is something about making something this small that requires a completely different kind of attention. The painting happened in layers, building up colour combinations and motifs until the whole thing felt right. I used nail polish brushes for the detail work which gives the most beautiful fine lines.

About the Series

These tiny vases are one of my favourite things to make. Each one is a completely different combination of colours, marks and glazes that I was drawn to in that moment. No two are ever the same.
