Ariel Stoneware Ceramic Drop Earrings

Description

A two tier drop earring hand built from recycled stoneware clay, each tier pressed with a botanical stamp and glazed in a different colour so the two pieces together move from deep navy at the top through to teal green below. The raw clay breaks through in the grooves between the glaze and gives her that feeling of earth underneath everything. She hangs from stainless steel hooks and sits long against the neck. Made by me in Melbourne. One of a kind, she won't be made again.

Story Behind the Piece

I wanted to try an ombre and I kept thinking about the places where things meet. Where the sky kisses the sea. Where the sea meets the grassy land. Ariel is that moment of transition, two pieces, two colours, two worlds sitting right next to each other.

Artist Notes

Each tier was hand built separately using cookie cutters, then pressed all over with a botanical stamp while the clay was still soft. After cutting the hanging holes and sponging the edges, I glazed the top tier in deep navy and the lower tier in teal green before the first firing. The raw clay showing through the glaze in the stamped grooves is part of what gives her that layered, almost geological look. The two tiers are connected with stainless steel jump rings. After the second firing I assembled all the hardware by hand to complete the piece.

Recycled stoneware clay, navy underglaze, teal underglaze, stainless steel hooks and jump rings.

Care Instructions

Store in a dry place. Avoid contact with water, perfumes and lotions. Remove before swimming or showering. Clean gently with a soft dry cloth. Store separately to prevent scratching.
