Aria Ceramic Speckle Square Earrings

DESCRIPTION

Introducing Aria, a ceramic speckle square drop earring from the studio. She is hand built from recycled speckle stoneware and hung on a silver hook so she sits on a diagonal, like a little diamond. The base is a warm creamy stone with dark flecks, and a tissue transfer floral pattern sits on top in soft olive green. The pattern is loose and gestural, more like a botanical scribble than a formal print, which I love about her. One of a kind, handmade in Melbourne.

STORY BEHIND THE PIECE

Aria came to me from curiosity about what tissue transfers actually do to a surface. The speckle clay felt like the right base, something with enough character to hold its own against the pattern. The floral motif loosened in the kiln in a way I was not expecting, less precise than the transfer paper suggested, and I found I loved it more for that.

ARTIST NOTES

Aria was hand built from recycled speckle stoneware, rolled and cut into a square tile before being angled on the hook to create that diamond shape. The tissue transfer was applied before the first firing so the pattern fuses with the glaze rather than sitting on top of it. The olive green deepened in the kiln in a way I find completely irresistible. After the second firing I assembled all the hardware by hand to complete the piece.

MATERIALS

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

Store in a dry place. Avoid contact with water, perfumes and lotions. Remove before swimming or showering. Clean gently with a soft dry cloth. Store separately to prevent scratching.

ABOUT THE SERIES

Ceramic jewellery from the studio is hand built one piece at a time from stoneware and porcelain. Each piece goes through two firings and is assembled by hand. Because the making process involves clay, glaze and heat, no two pieces ever come out exactly the same.
