I kept thinking about being tiny in a giant flower garden, everything enormous and bright, petals the size of rooms. I wanted to see if I could translate that softness into clay, something that looked like it was still moving. The black and indigo combination was intuitive, I wanted her to feel dramatic and considered, the kind of piece that changes depending on where the light hits.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eArtist Notes\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI built Ruffle by hand, layering strips of stoneware clay and coaxing them into undulating forms that reference folded fabric. The black underglaze goes on first, then the indigo chun glaze over the top. The chun glaze is unpredictable in the kiln, which is part of what I love about it. The blue flashes through differently on every surface depending on the angle. The wave formation along the base is the sea breaking them. I still wanted them to be functional though, which felt important.
