I was drawn to the original image for its strength and femininity and I wanted to sit with it long enough to really understand it. Every sequin, every fold, every highlight was painted mark by mark on a digital canvas. It was also where I learned the most about how light behaves on different textures, something that now influences how I approach surface and glaze in my ceramic practice. I wanted to see if I could translate that softness into clay, something that looked like it was still moving. The black and indigo combination was intuitive, I wanted her to feel dramatic and considered, the kind of piece that changes depending on where the light hits.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eArtist Notes\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI built Ruffle by hand, layering strips of stoneware clay and coaxing them into undulating forms that reference folded fabric. The black underglaze goes on first, then the indigo chun glaze over the top. The chun glaze is unpredictable in the kiln, which is part of what I love about it. The blue flashes through differently on every surface depending on the angle. I was thinking about icebergs, the way they break apart and drift, and about rising sea levels and what we are losing. The two pieces together are meant to feel like a single thing coming apart. The wave formation along the base is the sea breaking them. I still wanted them to be functional though, which felt important. The rough surface texture comes from slip applied over the slab before building. Each piece was glazed by dipping into white gloss and then splattering with black and blue glazes, some watered down and some not, to see how the different consistencies would interact and flow. The result is different on every surface.
